Tourism info concerning you trip to the James Bay Walleye Festival

Getting there

The Chapais region is accessible from route 113 in Abitibi-Temiscamingue or from route 167 via Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean. The distance from Montreal and 550 km from Québec on paved roads. Your unique fishing experience in the region is well worth the trip.  As a matter of fact, the several lakes and rivers of the region offer a large fishing  species variety  including the Walleye, the Northern pike, the lake trout and also the brook trout in the rivers situated at the North of the region. This vast territory allows you to fish in outfitters, in parks in addition to the free territory. Finally, the North route and the James Bay route will permit you to explore this new world.

 Tournament Categories

The tournament is divided into two main categories the Catégorie « Amateurs » (amateur category ) and the catégorie professionnels (professional category). The amateur category is divided into four sub-sections;  le volet Baie-James (James Bay)  in which you can participate in the entire James Bay region, le volet Opémiska (Opemiska category) that take place on the Opemiska lake during the week of festivities, le volet féminin (women) for women only and  le volet jeunesse (Youth) which focuses on people younger than 18 years old in order to encourage outdoor family activities. As for the professional category, it occurs one day only with teams of two to three fishermen and time is a factor for gaining points in the rankings. At that moment, team spirit meets fishing challenges and are at their best.

Stations d’enregistrement au volet Baie-James

As part of the regional sub-section of the James Bay Walleye Festival (volet régional), you can fish on the entire territory which spands from the 49th to the 55th parallel. However, while fishing North of the 52nd parallel non-residents must rely on an outfitter. Since the region is vast, registration posts are spread into the five following cities: Chapais, Chibougamau, Lebel-sur-Quévillon, Waswanipi and Mistissini. These post have all the necessary equipment to mesure your catch and some are in gas station which allows you to take advantage of longer opening hours.  This is how you will be able to register your fish into the James Bay category (volet Baie-James) during the whole  month of June.

At the end of each day, at the unloading dock registration post, fishermen are tallied to make sure everybody makes their way back safely. Radio contact is constantly maintained between the registration post and the lake patrol which covers the 77 km2 of the lake. As for site safety, the members of the organizing committee are easily recognizable to help you with everything you might need.
Finally, the region's territory is secured by la Sûreté du Québec and the ambulance is only ten km away from the festival site.

 Youth and Fishing

How awesome is it to see the bright eyes of a child who catches a fish? He is proud, is having fun, is spending time outside and having quality time with his family. To encourage this, a familiarization activity is organized each year. For children who already caught the fishing bug, they can win prizes by registering into the Youth category (volet jeunesse) of the festival.
